HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

The German Commitment Cross (Deutsches Bekenntnis Kreuz) was instituted by the German Community / German People's Order (Deutsche Volksgemeinschaft / Deutscher Volksorden). It was awarded from 1920 to 1936, gilded non-ferrous metal, enamelled. Size: cca 44.2 mm x 48.3 mm with the eyelet, weight: cca 20.2 grams. The Allgemeine Deutsche Volksgemeinschaft was a kind of umbrella organisation for German-ethnic associations in the 1920s. The concept of the German national community is older. The first covenant was the "German Covenant", which was founded in 1894 and took care of protecting German citizenship. Similar associations such as the Kolonialkriegerbund (Colonial Warriors' Association) or the Alldeutsche Verband (All-German Association) also looked after German settlements abroad. These were founded on emigration or colonisation. The foundation stone was always the German descent and ethnicity. It may also be possible that the Allgemeine Deutsche Volksgemeinschaft was an organ to look after and include German "Volksgemeinschaften" located abroad. The headquarters of the federal government was in Königstein on the Elbe, the federal leader was Max Otto and the first federal chairman Hermann Steuer. The crosses were probably awarded in 2 classes, with swords as 1st class and without as 2nd class, each with different bands. There are 2 different types of manufacturing of the crosses. The 1st shape has a rounded eyelet and an embossed central shield on the upper cross arm. The shape shown here has an ordinary eyelet soldered on top and a medallion placed separately. The sizes also vary somewhat. The "co-embossed" cross measures 42.5 x 42.7 mm with eyelet 46.8 mm. No inscription on the back and only approx. 1.5 mm thick. The cross made of gilded non-ferrous metal. The cross arms of the front are gold-trimmed with wide black enamelled edges. The inside of the cross arms are enamelled in white. At the front is a round, enamelled central plate. On the upper cross arm a soldered ordinary eyelet with a band ring. Obverse: the centre shield is gold trimmed, with red glass enamel. Below is a translucent hatching. Then the golden 3-line inscription: - TREU - / - DEM - / - VATERLAND -. Reverse: smooth gold-plated without enamel. A circular line increases in the middle. In it the 3-line font: - DEUTSCHES - / - BEKENNTNIS - / - KREUZ -. A 5-pointed star in the middle above and below the writing.
