HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

Berlin Fire Service & Civil Protection Service Cross Special Grade (Feuerwehr- und Katastrophenschutz-Ehrenzeichen Sonderstufe) - Gilt-edged red enamel cross pattée, with pin device; the face with a gilt coats of arms of Berlin, between the arms of the cross decorated with gold oak leaves, reverse is inscribed ‘FÜR HILFE IN NOT LAND BERLIN’ (for merit in emergency). This is the current award in the Fire Service or Civil Protection of Berlin. The decoration is awarded in six stages: 1st stage for 10 years active service, 2nd stage for 25 years active service, 3rd stage for 40 years active service, 4th stage for 50 years active service, 5th stage for 60 years active service and the Special Grade for exceptional deeds. While the 1st to 5th level of the honorary award can receive all members of the volunteer fire brigades or civil protection services, the Special Grade is given to persons who have distinguished themselves by their particularly brave and determined behavior. A very rare award.
