HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

Wurttemberg Fire Service Decoration (Feuerwehrdienst-Ehrenzeichen) 1919-1925 - Circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension to the upper reverse; the face with a hexagonal medallion bearing a fireman’s helmet imposed on crossed axes and a ladder, encircled by a stylised laurel wreath and circumscribed ‘FÜR 25 JÄHRIGE DIENSTZEIT’ (for 25 years’ service); the reverse inscribed ‘FÜR 25 JÄHRIGE DIENSTZEIT’ (for 25 years’ service), maker’s mark ‘W.M.A.ST.’ (for Württembergisches Münz-Amt Stuttgart = the Wurttemberg Mint). The medal was instituted in 1919 to replace the previous royal version following the abolition of the monarchy at the end of World War I and was awarded to members of the Wurttemberg Fire Service, more than third of whom were part-time volunteers, for 25 years service. It was replaced in 1925 by a similar medal with the suspension loop attached to the top edge. The medal is not often seen, especially with its original case.
