HISTORY OF THE AWARD:
1962 Stormflood medal - In February of 1962, severe flooding struck several provinces in Northwest Germany. This flood was brought about by North Sea storm surges and affected mainly the coastal regions of Germany. Overall, the homes of about 60,000 people were destroyed, and the death toll amounted to 315 in Hamburg alone.. Many German civilians and military personnel served in the rescue efforts to save life and property. Further assistance was provided by NATO troops from other nations.
