HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

Gold Medal of Merit from the State of Vienna (Goldenes Verdienstzeichen des Landes Wien) - Persons who have rendered great services to the State of Vienna through public or private activities can be honored by being awarded the Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna. Every holder of a badge of honor is entitled to wear it in the prescribed manner and to call himself or herself an envoy. No other privileges are associated with the award. The badge of honor becomes the property of the person entrusted with it. There is no obligation to return after death. The award is a 46 x 46 mm, a fine Maltese cross with gold borders, whose arms are split in red and white enamel. The colorfully enamelled coat of arms of the federal state of Vienna is the centrepiece. Eleven gilded rays are included in each of the cross wings. The red-white ribbon is 45mm wide (triangular ribbons for men and ribbon bow for women).
