HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

Baden Medal for Work and Male Domestic Service (Medaille für Arbeit und männliche Dienstboten), 1895-1918 - Circular bronze medal with integral loop in the Baden style for ribbon suspension; the face with the head and shoulders portrait in relief of Grand Duke Friedrich I in General’s uniform with draped mantle, facing left, circumscribed ‘FRIEDRICH GROSHERZOG VON BADEN’ , signed ‘GÖTZ MAYER’, all within a laurel wreath in relief; the reverse with a central scrolled plaque inscribed ‘FÜR TREUE ARBEIT’ (for faithful work) imposed on a decorative background, fruit and a bee hive above, tools below, all within a laurel wreath in relief. The medal was instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich I on 11 November 1895 for ‘Personen, welche während 25 Jahren in treuer Pflichterfüllung in ein und demselben Dienstverhältnis gestanden haben’ (Persons who complete 25 years loyal scrupulous service in one and the same service relationship). The medal was rapidly replaced by one with the spelling of ‘GROSSHERZOG’ (rather than GROSHERZOG) corrected and is thus rare.
