HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

Medal of Merit for 25 Years’ Active Service in the Fire and Rescue Services (Ehrenmedaille für 25jährige verdienstliche Tätigheit auf dem Gebiet des Feuerwehr-und Rettungswesens), 1905-1918 issue - circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced cylinder for ribbon suspension; the face with the laurel-crowned head of Emperor Franz Joseph I facing right within an inverted circular laurel wreath; the reverse with a central plaque bearing the letters ‘XXV’ (= 25) imposed on a laurel wreath, a flaming torch above, circumscribed ‘FORTIDUDINI VIRTUTI ET PERSEVERANTIÆ’ (Latin = Bravery, Merit and Perseverance). The medal was instituted on 24 November 1905 to be awarded to members of the Fire Service on completion of 25 years’ loyal service. The medal was discontinued after the dissolution of the Austrian Empire and no more examples were awarded after 14 December 1918.
